Why I built Chillwari.
A few years ago I went on a trip with friends. We played tourist, shared meals, ordered our own drinks. Easier to just split everything evenly.
I tried an expense app. Sign up first, then ads, then so many fields just to log a coffee. The whole thing felt like homework. I kept thinking I'd log it later.
I kept thinking: if only there was one that was just tap and done. So I built it.
No signup. No ads.
Common questions
Can I split a receipt by saying who had what?
That is what Receipteller is for. Pick the people sharing the bill, attach a photo of the receipt, and describe the split: “Alex had the ice cream, Jo had the soda, share the rest.” Receipteller reads the items and drafts each person's share. Anything you don't mention is split evenly among the people you picked. Check it, fix anything wrong, and save.
Can I split a receipt in a language I don't read?
You do not have to read it. Describe what each person had in your own words. Receipteller matches your description against the items on the receipt, including unfamiliar or abbreviated names. When several items could match, it asks you instead of guessing. Review the items and the shares before saving.
Can we translate a menu and order together?
Pic'n Pick handles that. It turns a photo of the menu into a translated list your group can order from. Each person picks their own dishes. Close the ordering session and Pic'n Pick writes those choices up as one split expense, which saves the most work when four people order four different things.
Can we split travel expenses in different currencies?
Yes, and nothing gets converted behind your back. Chillwari keeps expenses and balances by currency, so you can see what is owed in yen and what is owed in Taiwan dollars. Record partial repayments as you go, or settle in another currency using a conversion rate. Settle some of it during the trip and the rest once you're home.
Do my friends need to sign up or download an app?
No. Friends join through a link or code in their browser, with no account and nothing to install. Signing in with Google or Apple is optional, and exists so your trips follow you between devices. There is an iPhone app too; Android friends use the browser version.
Can I track everyone's share if I'm the only one using it?
One person is enough. Add your friends to the trip and record who paid and who shares each expense. Their shares count whether or not they have joined. You can keep the whole record yourself, and they can use the invite link whenever they get round to it.
Is Chillwari free, including receipt splitting?
Splitting expenses is free, and there will never be ads. Receipteller and Pic'n Pick are free today too, though they may become paid as the service grows. That is not decided yet. Supporting the project is voluntary and unlocks nothing.
Can I log a day of spending without a receipt?
A receipt is optional. Write the day down in a note, with the amounts and who shares what, and Receipteller turns it into expense drafts with dates, currencies and participants filled in. Look through the list, fix anything that's off, and pick which ones to add.
